Album Review : Puncture Wound

ARTIST: Puncture Wound
ALBUM: Complete Carnage of Coagulating Cacophonous Corpses
LABEL: 10-54
STYLE: Old school death metal
FORMAT REVIEWED: Inferior Bandcamp.

I remember the first time I listened to The Bleeding back in 1994. It was different from the other albums by Cannibal Corpse. The voice was clearer, yet guttoral. In many ways, a return to the true essence of death metal in the ’80s. No frills, just kills. From the moment the first track (Necroinsemination) from Puncture Wound‘s (AU) latest album (Complete Carnage of Coagulating Cacophonous Corpses) opens, I had the exact same feeling. Not only is this album brutal, it makes you ache for the time that death metal was like this in the early ’90s. No gimmick-y 20 second songs with 0 inspiration or thought behind the music. Puncture Wound offers the ingredients for a perfect piece of bloodsoaked cake: a grunt that seems straight ripped out of the vocalists throat, guitars that could shred a precision milimeter skin off your flesh, drums that would have a drumcomputer format itself out of shame and a bassline so hard, throbbing and thumping it should have its own porn-nickname. As I’m writing this, I’m forced to listen to the less-than-perfect (qualitywise) Bandcamp release (COVID-19 is having my CD Digipak delayed) but I can tell you right now, the moment that album arrives in the mail, it’ll get the glorious HIFI speaker treatment. To me (an oldschool detah metal fan) this album has no flaws. A gem any death-head should have in their collection.

Rating: a rare 5/5!
Favorite track: (among others) Perverse Sodomy Infatuation
